چکیده
Olfaction is the sense of smell. It is the phenemenon of receptors detecting certain properties about the molecules that are known as odorants. The perception of an odour is the result of an extraordinary complex cascade of events. The very first steps of this perception involves the interaction of chemicals with our olfactory neurons[7]. Odour is a property that depends on several highly variable factors. There is a many to many mapping between these factors. Cracking the combinatorial code is, of course, the first step towards our understanding of the complex mechanism involved in the perception of smell. Such a function is performed by the central part of our olfactory system (the olfactory bulb, olfactory cortices, etc.). Beyond that, socalled peri-receptor events, notably implying proteins present in the olfactory mucus, likely contribute to the subtlety of our perception by modulating how the quality, the quantity and the kinetics of the odourant signal are coded.[8, 10]

Effect of temperature on free vibration of functionally graded microbeams
Modified couple stress theory is applied to study of temperature effects on free vibration of Timoshenko functionally graded microbeams. Due to the interatomic and microstructural reactions of the structures in micro scale, the dynamic behavior of the microbeam is predicted more accurate applying the couple stress theory. Both of the simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are assumed ...
متن کاملStatus of the Vibrational Theory of Olfaction
The vibrational theory of olfaction is an attempt to describe a possible mechanism for olfaction which is explanatory and provides researchers with a set of principles which permit predictions allowing for structure-odor relations. Similar theories have occurred several times throughout olfactory science; this theory has again recently come to prominence by Luca Turin, who suggested that inelas...
متن کاملImplausibility of the vibrational theory of olfaction.
The vibrational theory of olfaction assumes that electron transfer occurs across odorants at the active sites of odorant receptors (ORs), serving as a sensitive measure of odorant vibrational frequencies, ultimately leading to olfactory perception. A previous study reported that human subjects differentiated hydrogen/deuterium isotopomers (isomers with isotopic atoms) of the musk compound cyclo...
متن کاملMeasuring smells.
Olfaction consists of a set of transforms from a physical space of odorant molecules, through a neural space of information processing, and into a perceptual space of smell. Elucidating the rules governing these transforms depends on establishing valid metrics for each of the three spaces. Here we first briefly review the perceptual and neural spaces, and then concentrate on the physical space ...
متن کاملComparison of Olfactory Function before and After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Material...
